The frame was completely stripped using Nitromors and a blow torch down to bare metal, and then coated with smooth Hammerite blue 'cos I hate black frames. It was a mistake to use Hammerite - I've never had any luck with it - I find it chips very easliy. I'll probably have the frame powder coated eventually, but not just now - I want to ride the damn thing!
I put taper roller bearings in the headstock as the original bearings were shot, otherwise I put it all back together. I had to buy new side panels as the ones that came with the bike were for a later model and were held on with cable ties, however the logos were stick on and I liked them so they went on the new panels - not the correct ones but so what. The seat I had recovered at a local upholsterers. It worked out OK in the end, but I had to take it off and restretch it a couple of times till I was happy with it.
